I recently had the chance to try out the Abba Patio Outdoor Pop Up Canopy. I have to say I resisted this type of thing for a long time. We always seem to need one for one event or another and I was happy to borrow from a friend, but never wanted to invest in one myself because they are typically so heavy and awkward to both store and move around as well as being difficult to put up. The Abba version may have made a convert out of me.

First off, the Abba product quality is so consistent across their products. While it isn’t the least expensive product on the market, it is really a great mid priced option that provides quality and simplicity, with a few nice extras included at a lower price point.

The storage bag, unlike some others I have seen, is a durable material and a reasonable size, considering what is inside.
The bag is on wheels which makes transport of its 45 pound contents easier to manage. I can’t quite fit it in the trunk of my sedan. It is SO CLOSE though and would probably fit if I had one or two more inches. I can still get it in the car with one side of the back seat folded down though. The height of the bag is about 4 feet but I’ve borrowed some that are almost as tall as I am and that alone makes maneuvering a challenge.

Once finally at your destination, I have always struggled with is how difficult “easy ups”, despite their name, are to put up by yourself, OR if you are lucky enough to find one that is easy to put up, it is near impossible for one person to dismantle.
I had no one available to help, so I gave it a go on my own. It took me about 10 minutes to do by myself the first time out. The structure is pretty standard – the legs are extendable with a button push.

I appreciated the fact that the button was actually one you could push in with little difficulty – my wife would be able to do this one without any complaining. The pole itself is lightweight, but feels plenty sturdy. On the top end of the pole there is a nice looking and easy to use lever to lock the top into place. If you have middle school or higher aged kids, they would be able to help if they are tall enough – no concern about pinched fingers at all thanks to the design.

The cover is lightweight enough that it isn’t difficult to pack and move around but of a type of fabric that seems durable and will not easily succumb to the elements – its plenty sturdy and not going to tear. If you have any of the other Abba patio products, you know what kind of quality to expect. I would definitely consider using it on our patio in the summer as part of our outdoor living space. The canopy also provides UV protection and is waterproof according to the product info. I like the tan color that we have, but there are two other color options available – blue and a dark gray.

There are pretty standard Velcro straps to hold the cover in place as well as tie downs and stakes if you find yourself in higher winds. There are also some third-party canopy weights you can pick up if you really feel the need.

Inside the canopy there are some nice attachment points on the inside of the structure – it seems we are always looking for a place to hang a banner for a school function or party or lights for holiday events or summer barbeques. It covers a pretty standard 10 x 10 area.

More impressive than the ease of getting the structure together was the fact that I can break it down on my own. Would it be easier with two? Sure, but this one is possible to take down solo without too much difficulty.

Conclusion

Overall, I have to say I was really impressed and the Abba Patio Outdoor Pop Up Canopy really proved worthy of the “easy up” designation. No more borrowing for me – I’m a convert. I expect the Abba Patio Pop Up to serve us well for years to come.
